We started this because we needed it ourselves

Every educator at calm-bastion has been where you are – confused, overwhelmed, and wondering why nobody ever taught us this stuff.

The origin story nobody asked for (but we're telling anyway)

In 2019, three of us sat in a Melbourne cafe, each dealing with our own financial mess. One had just defaulted on a personal loan. Another was paying minimum balances on five credit cards. The third had discovered she was on track to retire with less superannuation than she'd spend in a single year.

We all had university degrees. We all had decent jobs. And we all felt like failures because we couldn't manage something as basic as money.

The turning point came when we realized we weren't alone – and we weren't stupid. We'd simply never been taught. The Australian education system assumes someone else is teaching financial literacy. Parents assume schools are handling it. And most of us stumble into adulthood with no idea how credit cards actually work, what compound interest means, or why we should care about our super before we're fifty.

"We built the courses we wish we'd had at 18, 25, and 35. Because it's never too late, but earlier is always better." — The calm-bastion founding team

What we learned (the hard way)

After two years of teaching ourselves – reading books, taking courses, making expensive mistakes, and slowly fixing our own financial situations – we started noticing patterns in what actually helped versus what just sounded impressive.

We started teaching friends. Then friends of friends. Then we ran a free workshop at a community centre and sixty people showed up. That's when we knew this needed to be bigger than casual advice over coffee.

How we're different (and why it matters)

We're not financial advisors – we're educators. We don't sell investment products, manage portfolios, or earn commissions on anything we recommend. Our only goal is teaching you the foundational knowledge you need to make your own informed decisions.

Every course we create starts with a simple question: "What do people actually need to know to handle this aspect of their finances confidently?" Then we strip away everything that doesn't directly answer that question.

No upsells. No hidden fees. No pressure to buy advanced courses or premium memberships. You pay for a course, you get that course, and if it helps you, maybe you'll come back for another one. That's the entire business model.

Who teaches your courses

Our team includes former accountants who got tired of only helping wealthy clients, teachers who saw the gap in education, and regular people who figured out money the hard way and want to make it easier for others.

What we all have in common: we remember what it's like not to understand this stuff. We remember the shame, the confusion, and the feeling that everyone else somehow got a manual we never received.

That empathy shapes everything we create. We don't talk down to you. We don't assume you know terms we haven't explained. And we never make you feel stupid for asking basic questions – because every expert was once a beginner who asked those same questions.

What we've accomplished so far

Since 2021, we've taught over 3,400 Australians the financial basics they deserved to learn years ago. Our students range from 19 to 67 years old. They're students, tradies, nurses, executives, parents, and retirees. The common thread isn't age or income – it's the desire to finally understand how money works.

We've watched people pay off debts they thought would follow them forever. We've seen complete beginners start investing confidently. We've heard from dozens of students who've taught their own children what they learned in our courses, breaking the cycle of financial illiteracy.

That's what keeps us going. Not the business metrics or the revenue – the messages from people who finally feel in control of their financial lives.
